Tim Cook to MITs Class of 2017 How will you serve humanity

Tim Cook to MITs Class of 2017 How will you serve humanityTim Cook to MITs Class of 2017 How will you serve humanityIts graduation season, and we here at Ladders have decided to take a look back and showcase some past commencement addresses that stand the test of time. Below is the full transcript of Tim Cooks commencement address to MITs Class of 2017Hello, MITThank you. Congratulations class of 17. I especially want to thank Chairman Millard, President Reif, distinguished faculty, trustees, and the members of the class of 1967. It is a privilege to be here today with yur families and yur friends on such on amazing and important day.MIT and Apple share so much. We both love hard problems. We love the search for new ideas, and we especially love finding those ideas, the really big ones, the ones that can change the world. I know MIT has a proud tradition of pranks or as you would call them, hacks. And you have have pulled off some pretty great ones over the years. Ill never figure ou t how MIT students sent that Mars rover to the Kresge Oval, or put a propeller beanie on the great dome, or how youve obviously taken over the presidents Twitter account. I can tell college students are behind because most of the Tweets happen at 300 a.m.Im really happy to be here. Today is about celebration. And you have so much to be proud of. As you leave here to start the next leg of your journey in life, there will be days where you ask yourself, Where is this all going? What is the purpose? What is my purpose? I will be honest, I asked myself that saatkorn question and it took nearly 15 years to answer it. Maybe by talking about my journey today, I can save you some time.Itscommencement seasonFollow LaddersCommencement Addresses magazine on Flipboardto watch and read all of the most inspiring speeches from this year and years past. The struggle for me started early on. In high school, I thought I discovered my lifes purpose when I could answer that age-old question, What do you want to be when you grow up? Nope. In college I thought Id discover it when I could answer, Whats your major? Not quite. I thought that maybe Id discovered it when I found a good job. Then I thought I just needed to get a few promotions. That didnt work either.I kept convincing myself that it was just over the horizon, around the next corner. Nothing worked. And it was really tearing me apart. Part of me kept pushing ahead to the next achievement. And the other part kept asking, Is this all there is? I went to grad school at Duke looking for the answer. I tried meditation. I sought guidance in religion. I read great philosophers and authors. And in a moment of youthful indiscretion, I might even have experimented with a Windows PC, and obviously that didnt work. After countless twists and turns, at last, 20 years ago, my search brought me to Apple. At the time, the company was struggling to survive. Steve Jobs had just returned to Apple, and had launched the Think Different campaign . He wanted to empower the crazy ones- the misfits, the rebels and the troublemakers, the round pegs, and the square holes- to do the best work. If we could just do that, Steve knew we could really change the world. Before that moment, I had never met a leader with such passion or encountered a company with such a clear and compelling purpose to serve humanity. It was just that simple. Serve humanity. And it was in that moment, after 15 years of searching, something clicked. I finally felt aligned. Aligned with a company that brought together challenging, cutting edge work with a higher purpose. Aligned with a leader who believed that technology which didnt exist yet could reinvent tomorrows world. Aligned with myself and my own deep need to serve something greater.Of course, at that moment I dont know all of that. I was just grateful to have psychological burden lifted. But with the help of hindsight, my breakthrough makes a lot mora sense. I was never going to find my purpose worki ng some place without a clear sense of purpose of its own. Steve and Apple freed me to throw my whole self into my work, to embrace their mission and make it my own. How can I serve humanity? This is lifes biggest and most important question. When you work towards something greater than yourself, you find meaning, you find purpose. So the question I hope you will carry forward from here is how will you serve humanity? The good berichterstattung is since you are here today you are on a great track. At MIT you have learned how much power that science and technology have to change the world for the better. Thanks to discoveries made right here, billions of people are leading healthier, more productive and more fulfilling lives. And if were ever going to solve some of the hardest problems facing the world today, everything from cancer to climate change to educational inequality, then technology will help us to do it. But technology alone isnt the solution. And sometimes its even part of the problem.Last year I had the chance to meet with Pope Francis. It was the most incredible meeting of my life. This is a man who has spent more time comforting the inflicted in slums than with heads of state. This may surprise you, but he knew an unbelievable amount about technology. It was obvious to me that he had thought deeply about it. Its opportunity. Its risks. Its morality. What he said to me at that meeting, what he preached, really, was on a topic that we care a lot about at Apple. But he expressed a shared concern in a powerful new way Never has humanity had such power over itself, yet nothing ensures it will be used wisely, he has said.Technology today is integral to almost all aspects of our lives and most of the time its a force for good. And yet the potential adverse consequences are spreading faster and cutting deeper. The threats to security, threats to privacy, fake news, and social media that becomes antisocial. Sometimes the very technology that is meant to con nect us divides us. Technology is capable of doing great things. But it doesnt want to do great things. It doesnt want anything. That part takes all of us. It takes our values and our commitment to our families and our neighbors and our communities, our love of beauty and belief that all of our faiths are interconnected, our decency, our kindness.Im not worried about artificial intelligence giving computers the ability to think like humans. Im more concerned about people thinking like computers without values or compassion, without concern for consequences. That is what we need you to help us guard against. Because if science is a search in the darkness, then the humanities are a candle that shows us where weve been and the danger that lies ahead. As Steve once said, technology alone is not enough. It is technology married with the liberal arts married with the humanities that make our hearts sing. When you keep people at the center of what you do, it can have an enormous impact. It means an iPhone that allows the blind person to run a marathon. It means an Apple Watch that catches a heart condition before it becomes a heart attack. It means an iPad that helps a child with autism connect with his or her world. In short, it means technology infused with your values, making progress possible for everyone.Whatever you do in your life, and whatever we do at Apple, we must infuse it with the humanity that each of us is born with. That responsibility is immense, but so is the opportunity. Im optimistic because I believe in your generation, your passion, your journey to serve humanity. We are all counting on you. There is so much out there conspiring to make you cynical. The internet has enabled so much and empowered so many, but it can also be a place where basic rules of decency are suspended and pettiness and negativity thrive.Dont let that noise knock you off course. Dont get caught up in the trivial aspects of life. Dont listen to trolls and for Gods sake dont be come one. Measure your impact in humanity not in the likes, but the lives you touch not in popularity, but in the people you serve. I found that my life got bigger when I stopped carrying about what other people thought about me. You will find yours will too. Stay focused on what really matters. There will be times when your resolve to serve humanity will be tested. Be prepared. People will try to convince you that you should keep your empathy out of your career. Dont accept this false premise. At a shareholders meeting a few years back, someone questioned Apples investment and focus on the environment. He asked me to pledge that Apple would only invest in green initiatives that could be justified with a return on investment. I tried to be diplomatic. I pointed out that Apple does many things, like accessibility features for those with disabilities that dont rely on an ROI. We do the things because they are the right thing to d, and protecting the environment is a critical example. H e wouldnt let it go and I got my blood up. So I told him, If you cant accept our position, you shouldnt own Apple stock. When you are convinced that your cause is right, have the courage to take a stand. If you see a problem or an injustice, recognize that no one will fix it but you. As you go forward today, use your minds and hands and your hearts to build something bigger than yourselves. Always remember there is no idea bigger than this. As Dr. Martin Luther King said, All life is interrelated. We are all bound together into a single garment of destiny. If you keep that idea at the forefront of all that you do, if you choose to live your lives at that intersection between technology and the people it serves, if you strive to create the best, give the best, do the best for everyone, not just for some, then today all of humanity has good cause for hope.Thank you very much and congratulations class of 2017

Thomas Blanchard

Thomas Blanchard Thomas Blanchard Thomas BlanchardWith a blacksmith for a father, it is perhaps little wonder that Thomas Blanchard (1788-1864) sought to create such useful items. His most famous invention is the Blanchard Lathe, which could make numerous irregular objects out of wood. Carrie Brown, an associate curator for the American Precision Museum, says lathes had been around for a century before but could only make very uniform shapes, such as a spindle or a chair.Blanchard came up with this system of interconnected things that when all operated together could make something that was as irregular as a toothbrush handle, Brown says. The idea of a machine that could work in such a complex way was mechanical genius. Before industrialization such as this, it would have required a wittling knife, handfiling, or a blacksmith to hammer, Brown says. Everything made today comes down to the whole concept of interchangeable parts, Brown says. When we buy a lamp and something goes wrong w ith a switch, we can go to a hardware store and buy a new switch. We dont have to go to someone to make a new lamp from scratch. Blanchard was a major part of this movement.According to Todayinsci.com, the lathe is described as successively brought in contact with a small friction wheel this wheel precisely regulates the motion of chisels arranged upon a cutting wheel acting upon the rough block, so that as the friction wheel successively traverses every portion of the rotating pattern, the cutting wheel pares off the superabundant wood from end to end of the block, leaving a precise resemblance of the model. But as John Lienhard wrote for The Engines of Ingenuity series for the University of Houston, Blanchard had success even before his lathe of 1822. According to Lienhard, at the mere age of 13, he created a mechanical way to pare apples with a wire gage, which mimicked how our thumb is used to keep the apple in place during cutting. Lienhard went on to claim that approximately fi ve years later, he created a tack-making machine, getting to a level of 200 tacks per minute. However, NPS.gov (PDF) adds that he actually worked on tack producing with his brother and achieved a higher rate of 500 tacks per minute. In addition, he invented what was dubbed the horseless carriage, a steam-powered vehicle that some even believe to be the first car. Of course, since it was not as sophisticated as the cars that were rolled out in the late 19th century or the Model T in the early 20th century, its been all but forgotten. Considering what the aforementioned vehicle was powered by, its no wonder that Blanchard was a celebrated builder, noted in the Farmers Register as having built the Massachusetts and the Vermont steamboats. As the Register states, he contributed to transportation opportunities by putting together boats that sailed rivers such as the Connecticut, Kennebeck, Gennessee, and Susquehanna. But in the end, hell always be most remembered for the lathe. Says Brown, Blanchards place in history is guaranteed as one of the more versatile and thoughtful inventors in American history.Eric Butterman is an independent writer.Blanchards place in history is guaranteed as one of the more versatile and thoughtful inventors in American history.Carrie Brown, an associate curator for the American Precision Museum

Professional Manager vs. Entrepreneurial Manager

Professional Manager vs. Entrepreneurial ManagerProfessional Manager vs. Entrepreneurial ManagerAn entrepreneur has a dream. Skill, hard work, and luck turn that dream into a business success. At some point, as the company grows and matures, the founder faces a decision - should he/she continue to manage the company or stay with the dream. Should the founder continue with entrepreneurial management or is it time to engage professional managers so the founder can devote more time to the companys core idea? It is a question that must continue to be faced as the company continues to grow. When to Accept Help from a Professional When is the right time for the founder to relinquish control of his/her dream to a professional? Some would have you believe it has to happen as soon as the founder begins to look for outside capital. Others would have you believe it is never the right time. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines an entrepreneur as one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise and manager as one that manages as a) a person who conducts business or household affairs or b) a person whose work or profession is management. As you can landsee from those definitions, there is a lot of overlap between the two. Thats what makes the decision so hard. Many entrepreneurs are excellent managers. Often the founders decision to manage the company or manage the dream is a win in either case for the company. In many cases, the decision hinges on the founders definition of success. Does the founder want to grow the company into the biggest enterprise in its industry? Or would the founder rather limit growth to something that provides simply a good income and allows him/her to retain full control of the company and its goals and direction? A Personal Example of Professional Management Guiding an Entrepreneur A gentleman I know started a small software company based on his skill as a programmer. He has a real talent for programming lang uages, a good feel for what the market wants, and the resultant ability to produce specialty applications for select large companies. He also has a keen business sense, an excellent ability to market his companys capabilities, and has earned an enviable reputation for quality and innovation. He has built a network of contacts among the top levels of his biggest customers. He has been able to see new trends coming and has been agile enough to adjust to take advantage of them. As his company started to grow beyond the three guys in a garage stage, he found himself spending more time running the business than writing programs. So he hired a friend to manage the company so he could continue programming. He quickly learned that managing a growing company requires more skill than just friendship with the founder. He took the unpleasant, but necessary, step of eliminating the manager and resuming those duties. I met him several (no growth) years later. He welches continuing to struggle wit h his dilemma of running the company or continuing to program. He was doing both, but was concerned that he just didnt have the time or energy to do both of them well. In under a year, I had helped him more than double the size of the company. It was a move that provided new possibilities at the same time as a watershed change in the industry provided new opportunities. He chose to retake full control of the business himself. A couple of years later, after turning the company to a dramatically new course, he again stepped aside and again brought in professional management. The company has been very successful in their new market. And the founder again may find himself facing the decision of how much control he is willing to sacrifice to continue to grow. Will this be the time he surrenders majority control of the voting stock in exchange for a top-caliber management team? Or will he decide that his current reward from the company is adequate for his needs? A Tough Choice to Make It is tough for any entrepreneur to decide when, or whether, to relinquish control of their dream for the growth and freedom a professional management team can bring to their company.

Stop Whining About Your Career and Start Over

Stop Whining About Your Career and Start OverStop Whining About Your Career and Start OverTry this exercise on a blank sheet of paper, keep all your skills and experiences, but write down a new direction for your career and your business. What will you do differently? The shake-up following the Great Recession has been proffered as an opportunity to reassess our financial regulatory system and our national economic priorities. Its also a golden opportunity to examine your own career priorities. You should take into account pillars of your partieal economics that have been knocked down as well as the ways you can negotiate this new landscape.Consumers and companies are changing the way they behave in the marketplace, mostly as regards how they spend money. Savings is the trend and everyone - individual and organization alike - is being selective in terms of what they invest in.and so where do you go from here?Establish NWRTo start with, stop whining about whats happened. Start playin g.This fall I coached a 9-year-old boys soccer team. Two nights a week, we practiced for 90 minutes. Most of the time we played short-sided games of four versus four with makeshift goals. For the first five practices the boys spent a lot of time whining about what position each wanted to play and whether or not a shot was really a goal. Fifteen minutes into the fifth practice, I announced, We are establishing NWR. The boys stared at me with stunned looks on their faces. One boy finally said, What is that?I said, NWR stands for the No Whining Rule. You are no longer allowed to whine about what position youre playing or whether or not we say a shot is a goal. Whatever the referee (who is one of the coaches) calls, thats what were going to go with. Suddenly the boys just focused on playing soccer, and the practices became a lot more enjoyable and much more productive. As adults, we need to practice NWR. If I whine to myself about something for 15 minutes, I wasted those 15 minutes. If I whine to another person for 15 minutes, I wasted 30 minutes 15 of mine and 15 of hers. If I whine to nine people for 15 minutes, then thats 150 minutes of wasted productivity. This whining thing can pile up very quickly. I think a lot of us whine too much.Whining and complaining and criticizing have even become big business. Some of the highest-paid radio and cable television announcers essentially spend their entire on-air time whining about this issue or that one. Im not talking about people who are focused on improving a shortcoming. Im talking about people who simply use up their time complaining about stuff that they are not working toward improving. Imagine a huge crowd is cheering you on with, Stop whining, start playing. Is there a possibility that you are wasting time and energy whining about some aspect of your existence, like your career, that is keeping you from making the necessary changes to become more effective? Is your organization steadily hurting its own productivi ty by whining about something it cant control?Stop and Start OverI offer this advice in my articles about every 18 months and its time to do it again.Take out a blank sheet of paper and redesign your career and your business. You get to keep all of the knowledge, skills and experience that you have accumulated in your lifetime. But you dont have to keep doing anything the way you are currently doing it. Knowing what you know now and being given the opportunity to start your career or your organization over again from scratch, what will you do to generate the results you want both in your career and in your organization?Write down exactly what you will do going forward. Do not feel compelled to continue doing what you have always done in the past. Feel free to do whatever you think is the best thing for you to do at this point in time.Knowing what you know now with all of your experiences and skills in place, what are you going to do to generate sustainable success?Write your answers on a blank sheet of paper, and then execute your plan as well as you can.

Resignation Letter for a Dream Job Offer

Resignation Letter for a Dream Job OfferResignation Letter for a Dream Job OfferWhether you are leaving your job because youve found the job of your dreams, or for any other reason, you should provide formal notification to your employer that youre resigning. When you resign from a job, it is important to let your boss know in a formal resignation letter. Whether you give a reason, or not, is up to you. You can send a basic resignation lettersimply saying youre moving on, or let your boss know why. Below is an example of a resignation letter to notify your employer that youre leaving because you were offered your dream job and you simply couldnt turn it down. Give Two Weeks Notice If possible, give your employer the standard two weeks notice, or longer. If that is impossible, give the employer as much notice as you can. This will help you maintain a good relationship with your former employer. Make sure to include the date you plan to leave the company. This will give your employ er a clear sense of your timeline. Use the formal geschftsleben letter format when writing your letter. If time is of the essence, you might consider sending a resignation email instead of a letter. You might choose to mention that you are only leaving because you found an ideal job opportunity. However, do not feel the need to go into great detail. Keep your letter brief. Make sure to give thanks for the time you have worked at the company. Emphasize that you are only leaving because this new position is a perfect fit, not because you are unhappy with your current position. However, if you were unhappy with the company, do not complain or say anything negative in your letter. You want to maintain a good relationship with the employer you never know when your paths will cross again. If you are able to do so, offer to help the company with the transition. You might offer to train a new employee, for example. This is also an opportunity to ask any questions about compensation or bene fits, such as where or when you will receive your last paycheck. You should send the letter to both your employer and to the Human Resources office. Human Resources will be able to answer these kinds of questions. Include anon-company email address or another form of contact information that you want to include, so that your employer can get in touch with you. This is especially important if you are leaving right away. Be sure to thoroughly proofread your letter for any typos. This is a professional business letter, so make sure it is polished. How you can encourage your company to make an impact

How you can encurage your company to make an impactHow you can encourage your company to make an impactAnyone whos ever seen The Wolf of Wall Street knows that big business is often depicted as the big bad wolf. Of course, every company wants to turn a profit and keep their shareholders happy, but I know from experience that businesses can make money and be a force for good. And thats why we at B Lab, a nonprofit that helps entrepreneurs solve social and environmental problems through impact measurement, are committed to redefining success in business. Thanks to their size and status, many for-profit organizations are in the privileged position of being able to affect the social and environmental well-being of their communities - and even the world - through their everyday operations if theyre proactive about it.At B Lab, its our mission to help businesses build a mora shared and durable prosperity that everyone on earth can benefit from. As a standards analyst, its my job to help c ompanies navigate the B Corp Certification process, which classifies companies that are committed to positively influencing society and the environment. When a company becomes a certified B Corp, the financial gain of their shareholders is no longer their sole priority they are legally committing themselves to doing what is in the best interest of all stakeholders, including local residents, the local community, and the environment. Once they are certified, they receive a score based on the size of the impact theyre making. Thanks to my work, Ive had a front row seat as companies prioritized people and the planet in addition to profits. And, as it turns out, businesses that do so are actually at a huge advantage over other companies that dont. Part of my job involves going on site visits and interviewing employees about their job satisfaction, and I cant tell you how many times Ive heard employees of my generation say they value the transparency and forward-thinking leadership and em powerment thats prevalent at B Corp companies, especially compared to the working environments at more traditional companies.Fortunately, you dont have to be the CEO of a huge business to make a difference. I believe a single employee can convince their company to make significant environmental and social change. Want to help your company do more good? Heres how1. Find an allyStart by thinking about the changes you hope to make. For example, if you work at a company where you want to cultivate environmental stewardship by recycling more and conserving electricity, than you should first figure out who within the companys infrastructure is responsible for those things. If you have a personal relationship with that person or a mentor who can connect you, start there. If not, human resources is always a good place to begin those conversations.2. Express the value of what youre trying to doOnce youve identified an ally, you can then approach the companys leadership to explain how much yo ur plan could save the business, and why making such changes are great for the bottom line, company culture, and employee satisfaction. For instance, independent companies often dont think about things like water intake or energy usage. So, those are easy areas for an entry-level or mid-level employee to address, which also save a company money.3. Establish a plan of impactIn order to achieve your goals, you need a viable plan. Maybe its something you brainstorm with HR. Maybe its something you establish an internal committee to weigh in on. But, no matter what, you should outline specific initiatives you and your company can take to make a difference. Remember, these changes can feel overwhelming at first, so break them into steps and tischset achievable goals.4. Put it in writingYour plan should always include writing or updating a policy that clearly states what youre trying to achieve. For example, if want to institute a policy stating that employees can have 20 hours of paid ti me off to volunteer, putting that in writing and integrating that into the employee handbook ensures your company is going to make good on that promise.5. Hold yourself and others accountableOne thing that Ive seen work at the companies that Ive stewarded through the B Corp Certification process is instituting competitions that challenge and incentivize employees to stay on track with these new policies. A lot of companies use Slack or other messaging services, and theyll send out a message like Happy Friday The employee who recycles the most material today will win and then theyll promise some sort of recognition. Focus on making it fun while inspiring employees to get creative.6. If all else fails, be the change you wish to seeIf your company isnt onboard with making any changes, that doesnt mean you cant make changes on your own in an unofficial capacity. Sure, it can be a lot of responsibility, but you can engage your fellow employees directly to make a positive impact outside o f the main operational system. I know some manufacturing employees who formed a volunteer group outside of the office twice a week they volunteer at a local orphanage. It wasnt an official company effort, but they still got to do something impactful. And thats what matters most.Thisarticleoriginally appeared onTheWell,Jopwellsdigital magazine.TheWellisthedigital magazine of Jopwell, thecareer advancement platform for Black, Latino/Hispanic and Native American professionals and students.Subscribeto receive weekly stories and advice in your inbox.
